Details / Calle Alcala
![]() |
In the early 20th century, the street became Madrid’s financial centre, resulting in the construction of the impressive buildings seen today. Although the business area has now shifted to Paseo de la Castellana, many banks still keep their headquarters here.
The first imposing building is the vast Treasury Department. Next door is the Fine Arts Academy. The opulent Casino de Madrid is a private gentlemen’s club. Although not open to the public, you can see inside to the opulent hallway and staircase. You don’t have to be a member to eat at the superb restaurant on the top floor, which has a Michelin star.
The Banco Bilboa Vizcaya Argentaria, which curves around the facing corner of Calle Sevilla, was designed by Richard Bastida at the beginning of the 20th century. Look up at the two chariots, each drawn by four horses, which seem to be galloping off the roof.
