Sitting at the geographical heart of Iberia, on a high central plain far from the sea, Madrid has been Spain’s capital only since 1561, when Felipe II decided to settle the country’s court in one place. Madrid may short on history compared with the other great capitals of Europe, but these days it more tan makes up for it with a forward-looking dynamism and zesty energy few can match. Possible the busiest nightlife capital on the continent, it is also a magnet for art lovers.
Madrid is a powerful art magnet. In its three leading museums, along with countless smaller ones, you will discover a wealth of masterpieces. The Prado, which has been given a major overhaul, offers a concentration of Spanish masters that is second ton none. The Prado collection encompasses thousands of precious works from the Middle Ages to the nineteenth century.
The city is blessed with plenty of green spaces and tranquil parks. Just behind the Prado stretches the Parque del Buen Retiro, a grand stretch of sculpted gardens, woods, and artificial lakes where you can paddle about in little rented boats.
