Details / Iglesia de San Isidro el Real
![]() |
One of the most important churches in Madrid, San Isidro acted as the city’s cathedral for a century, until Nuestra Senora de la Almudena finally opened in 1993. It was originally the church of the Colegio Imperial de la Compania de Jesus, a prestigious Jesuit school funded by Empress Maria of Habsburg.
The main altar, built in the 18th century by Ventura Rodriguez, contains the tombs of the saint and his wife. On the left of the main altar, an oval chapel holds figures o the two saints. The three chapels on the right as you enter have figures, images that are revered by the Andalusian community in Madrid.
