The main park of Madrid, Parque del Buen Retiro (Park of the Pleasant Retreat), is a large and popular 1.4 square km park at the edge of the city centre, very close to the Puerta de Alcala. This magnificent park is entirely surrounded by the present day modern city. The park is filled with a lake, beautiful sculpture and monuments, galleries, and host to a variety of events; Parque del Buen Retiro is one of Madrid's premier destinations.
The Estanque del Retiro, a large artificial pond, is close to the northern entrance of the park. There are roses of all assortments and among the rose bushes stands the Fountain of the Falling Angel which is erected in 1922.
Cason del Buen Retiro and the Museo del Ejercito house museum collections. The Casón has a collection of 19th and 20th century paintings, including art by the Spanish painter Joaquín Sorolla.
The Paseo de la Argentina, also popularly known as Paseo de las Estatuas is close to the Retiro Park. The building is decorated with some of the statues of kings from the Royal Palace.
