Details / Toledo
![]() |
One of Spain’s great historic cities, Toledo is spectacularly situated on a granite hill, almost surrounded by the Tagus River. Its winding lanes are particularly atmospheric in the evening when the tourist buses have departed, making an overnight stay a rewarding experience if you have time.
Standing in the heart of the city, the extraordinary Cathedral was begun 1226 and completed in 1493, standing on the site of a sixth century temple founded by the Visigoths. West of the cathedral is a cluster of monuments including the Iglesia de Santo Tome, which houses El Greco’s masterpiece The Burial of the Count of Orgaz. Nearby is the Museo de El Greco, which contains a good collection of his paintings.
