Kingdom of Sweden is a Nordic country on the Scandinavian Peninsula in Northern Europe. Sweden borders with Norway and Finland. The country is also connected to Denmark by the Oresund Bridge. Stockholm is Sweden’s capital and largest city, with an estimated population of 800,000 and metropolitan area of approximately 2 million.
Sweden is the largest country by area in Northern Europe and fourth in all of Europe with the area of 449,964 sq. km. With a total population of over 9.1 million, Sweden also has a low population density of 52 people per square mile. About 84 percent of the population lives in the cities.
Sweden has a temperate climate with distinct seasons and mild temperatures. Because of the Gulf Stream Sweden is a lot warmer than other places in the same coordinates. Although there are occasional green winters in southern Sweden, heavy snowfalls can occur. In the mountains of northern Sweden a subarctic climate dominates.
Sweden is an export oriented market economy with a skilled labor force and an excellent internal and external communications. Timber, iron ore and hydropower constitute the resource base of the economy heavily oriented toward foreign trade.
Few nations in Europe offer such an exceptionally diverse landscape, rich in flora and fauna, as Sweden. From north of the Arctic Circle the country stretches a lengthy 977 miles south, a distance equal to almost half the length of Europe.
Besides the many specialist museums in the cities, there are more than 1,000 rural museums reflecting local history and popular culture. Great interest is shown in art and handicraft which can be seen in the countless galleries and shops.
