Details / Farjestaden
The Olandsbron Bridge connects Farjestaden on Oland with the mainland. Since the bridge’s arrival in 1970s, Farjestaden has more or less become a suburb of Kalmar. The first turning to the north in Farjestaden leads to Olands Djurpark, a popular destination for families. The zoo has 200 species of animals, a water world and amusement park, circus and theatre performances.
Beijershamn, south of Farjestaden, is an interesting reed-covered bird watching area with wetland and archipelago species. Not far from here is Karlevistenen, a remarkable eleventh century ruin-stone dedicated to a hero named Sibbe the Wise.
Vickleby village street, on Road 136 to the south, is the epitome of idyllic Oland. Next to the church is Capellagarden School of Craft and Design, founded by furniture designer Carl Malmsten in then 1950s and currently a centre for various design related courses. The school exhibits and sell students’ work.
East of Farjestaden, in the forest, is the Iron Age fort of Graborg with the medieval ruins of St Knut’s chapel just outside it.
