Details / Granna
Granna was at its height in the seventeenth century in the days of Count Per Brahe, who founded the town and whose plan is still evident today. On the square in the centre of town, Granna Museum has fascinating tales to tell of the tragic expedition to the North Pole headed by the town’s famous son Salomon August Andree in the hot-air balloon Ornen. Inspired by Andree, Granna has become a centre for balloon flights. The town is also known for its peppermint rock, an ideal souvenir. The red and white sweet originated in 1859 when widow Amalia Eriksson started a rock factory in the town.
Along the beautiful stretch of the E4 beside Lake Vattern, just north of Granna, lies the ruined Brahehus castle, built for Count Per Brahe in the 1640s. On a clear day Brahehus offers magnificent views over Vattern towards Vastergotland on the other side of the lake and Visingso.
This flat island can be reached by boat from Granna. It is the largest island in Lake Vattern, 14 kilometres long and three kilometers wide with a population of 800.
