King Magnus Ladulas granted Jonkoping its charter in 1284, by which time the town was already an important trading centre. For a long time Smaland formed Sweden’s southern border with Denmark, but when the Danes invaded in 1612 the people set fire to their town and fled to Visingso.
In the nineteenth century Jonkoping became synonymous with matchstick production; the Lundstrom brothers opened their first factory here in the 1840s. In the old part of town, the Match Museum is set in a former match factory. The historic Vastra Storgatan 37 houses Viktor Rydbergs Museum. Local history comes under the spotlight at Jonkopings Lans Museum. The museum also has a display of work by the local artist John Bauer, as well as contemporary art.
Just outside Jonkoping, Hakarps Kyrka is famous for its paintings by Edvard Orm. Taberg, a hill south of Jonkoping, is known as the Alps of Smaland. It has a café at its peak, 343 metres above sea level. The countryside is stunning, with extensive views over Lake Vattern. Sights include a mine and n industrial museum and there are hiking trails and overnight accommodation.
