The county capital and cathedral city of Linkoping lies in the middle of the Ostgota plain. Fist populate 3,000 years ago, it is now Sweden’s fifth largest city, and is known for its university and high-tech industry.

Construction of the Domkyrkan stated in the mid-thirteenth century. The interior contains superb medieval stone carvings. The Renaissance altarpiece is by the Dutch painter M. J. Van Heemskerck.

The old town open-air museum, Gamla Linkoping, is a collection of 80 buildings from the city and surrounding area. This charming setting, complete with picturesque wooden buildings, cobbled streets and gardens, is a window on a past way of life.

Malmen, site of Sweden’s first military flying school, is now home to the Swedish Air Force Museum. Exhibits include examples of Swedish military aircraft and other items from aviation history.
