Details / Tyska Kyrkan
The German church is an impressive reminder of the almost total influence that Germany had over Stockholm during the eighteenth century. The church’s congregation, which today has some 2,000 members, was founded in 1571. The present twin-aisle church was built in 1642, as an extension of a smaller church which the parish had used since 1576.
In German Late Renaissance and Baroque style, the interior has a royal gallery, added in 1672 for German members of the royal household. The pulpit in ebony and alabaster is unique in Sweden and the altar, from the 1640s, is covered with beautiful paintings surrounded by Jobst Hennen date from 1645 and show Jesus, Moses and three figures portraying Faith, Hope and Love.
