The Zytglogge tower is an attraction medieval tower in Bern. Constructed in the early thirteenth century, it has served the city as watch tower, jail, clock tower, centre of city life and civic monument.
in spite of the many redecorations and restorations it has undergone in its 800 years of way of life, the Zytglogge is one of Berne's most recognizable symbols and, with its fifteenth century astronomical clock, a main tourist attraction. It is a heritage site of national importance, and division of the Old City of Berne, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.
The Zytglogge has an overall height of 54.5 metres, and a height of 24 metres up to the roof-edge. Its rectangular floor plan measures 11.2 metres by 10.75 metres. The wall strengths differ broadly, ranging from 260 centimetres in the west, where the tower shaped part of the city walls, to 65 centimetres in the east.
The external look of the Zytglogge is determined by the 1770 reconstruction. Only the late Gothic cornice below the roof and the stair tower are noticeable artefacts of the tower's former history.
