Located in the heart of downtown Calgary, the Glenbow Museum is western Canada’s largest museum, hosting three major temporary exhibitions annually, in addition to having 21 permanent galleries on three floors.
A highlight is the Nitsitapiisinni Gallery, which reflects the long and colourful history, especially the period of the 1870’s, of the Blackfoot Indians. Note in particular the fine beadwork, the huge tepee and the 96-feather Stoney chieftain’s headdress.
The Glenbow Museum also houses an excellent collection of European and contemporary art, as well as a wide range of objects that chronicle the history of the Canadian West through First Nations and pioneer artifacts. An extensive military collection includes medieval armour and Samurai swords. Glenbow Museum also exhibits over 80 world class Asian sculpture
