Situated in the Alberta’s southwest corner along the US border, this national park in the Canadian Rockies forms an International Peace Park with the larger Glacier National Park in Montana. The park has been described as the place where the prairies meet the mountains. The area was designated a national park in 1895.
Waterton’s mix of lowland and alpine habitats means it has the widest variety of wildlife of any of Canada’s parks, from bears to bighorn sheep, and from waterfowl to nesting species such as sapsuckers.
There is an extensive system of trails connected to Glacier National Park, Montana, and to Akamina-Kishinena Provincial Park. Trails in the park range from short strolls to longer steep treks. There are more than 200 kms of trails offering breathtaking prairie and mountain views, open sky ridges, dense forests and emeral lakes. Experienced hikers can enjoy backcountry camping as backcountry permits are avaliable for overnight stays.
Waterton Townsite:
Waterton's service center is located in the heart of the natioal park. The tiny year round community, population 90, welcomes travellers from around the world. Surrounded by magnificent scenery, visitors will find all the services to make their stay a memorable one. Streetside eateries offer a variety of cuisines. Shops and gift shops appeal.
