Details / Huron County
![]() |
Of all of the counties in Area One, with the possible exception of Perth, Huron probably attracts the most tourists. This can be explained by the long sweep of Lake Huron shoreline that extends all the way from Grand Bend in the south to Clark Point in the north and which provides excellent boating, fishing, water sports and sunbathing.
Huron County has a fascinating history which is worth telling in some detail here. The county is not named, first of all, after the Huron Indians but after Lake Huron itself. While there were many Indians living in this area long before white settlement began, they were not Hurons but Attawandarons, known as the Neutrals.
In 1826 the Canada Company, headed by Scottish novelist John Galt, purchased more tan a million acres of land in the area extending eastward form Lake Huron.
