Details / Pine Point Rapids
Retuning on Rte. 309 from Big Whiteshell Lake, continue north on Rte. 307, heading northwest out of the Whiteshell Provincial Park. Stop just north of Betula Lake and stroll the Pine Point Rapids Trail, Whiteshell’s most scenic day hike. The route consists of two joined loops, the first leading to the second.
For 2.4 kilometres the path runs through boreal forest, pine and spruce spreading a canopy over an understory enlivened by bluebead lily, wild lily of the valley, and moccasin flower, a showy pink orchid. Bedrock erupts in places, creating openings where little grows except yellow, red, black, and green lichens.
Near the far curve of the first loop, the trail picks up the Whiteshell River and threads its north shore to a vantage point overlooking Pine Point Rapids. The second loop continues along the bank of the Whiteshell, passing Acorn Falls and Viburnum Falls.
