Details / Whitemouth Falls
As you exit Whiteshell Provincial Park on Rte. 307, do not be in a hurry to leave the area. About 5 kilometres west of the park boundary, just after you pass through the town of Seven Sisters Falls, turn north on a short gravel road to Whitemouth Falls Wayside Park.
This is an appealing picnic site, its tables scattered among oak, aspen, spruce, ash and birch. The understory of blueberries, chokecherries, raspberries, and other fruiting bushes attracts black bears in July and August. White-tailed deer and red foxes are also common.
After eating, stroll down past the blue flag and harebells to the falls that give this wayside its name. more horizontal than vertical, Whitemouth Falls nonetheless manages an impressive rush of water as the Whitemouth River thunders down an incline riddled with massive outcrops of Canadian Shield bedrock. The Whitemouth goes with a bang, not a whimper, as it empties into the Winnipeg River. River otters patrol this stretch of river, and muskrat and beavers swim in the calmer spots.
