Details / Grand Falls Gorge
One of eastern Canada’s grandest, longest and most picturesque waterways, the St. John River harbours many natural curiosities along its 418 mile length. One such spectacle is the aptly named Grand Falls, where the river abruptly funnels into a gorge and plunges 75 feet over a rocky ledge into the basin below. At high water in the spring, the freshet crashes down in a throaty roar.
The plunge pools of Grand Falls, dubbed the Wells in the Rocks, are worth closer inspection. On summer nights they are illuminated. Several short walking trails along the river and above the falls bid you to view the cascade from closer range.
