Details / Mount Carleton Provincial Park
The park encompasses several of the highest mountains of northern New Brunswick’s Appalachians. Seven lakes lie in the valleys among them, not to mention the headwaters of two different river systems: the Tobique River rises in the northwest corner of the park and then flows southwest to join the St. John, while the Nepisiguit River debouches from the Nepisiguit Lakes and eventually empties into Chaleur Bay. Forests of white birch, white and black spruce and balsam fir are mixed with pockets of red maple at lower elevations, giving the mountain views a different texture in each season.
Several easy groomed trails start at park headquarters. One is a 4.5 mile loop that begins and ends at a heated cabin; shortcuts allow you to cinch the loop to 3 milers or just 1. Experienced skiers may want to test themselves on the 10 mile swing around Nictau Lake, or the 19 mile round trip to the top of Mount Carleton.
