Details / Barachois Pond Provincial Park
![]() |
A wild and lonely landscape, this provincial park- the largest in western Newfoundland – is perhaps the most accessible and family friendly of all the island’s nature areas. U-shaped glacial valleys characterize the mountainous terrain. Balsam fir and stands of birch, maple, and rare black ash blanket the valleys, while bogs pockmark the higher elevations.
Several boardwalk trails crisscross the valley and offer gentle hikes that traverse mountain streams and forest. The views over the Long Range Mountains to the east and of the waters of ST. George’s Bay and the Gulf of St. Lawrence to the west are splendid. Erin Mountain Trail leaves from the end of the loop road around campsites 1 to 44 on the peninsula; it crosses a bridge over the narrows of Barachois Pond. A sandy freshwater swimming beach lines each side of the peninsula.
