Details / Torngat Mountains
Ecology, history, culture, ornithology, wildlife biology, and even mineralogy all dovetailed in the late 1990s to make the Torngat Mountains a Canadian park reserve-in-waiting. The push to protect the Torngats stemmed form the desire to crate an environmental showcase for a region that has never been seriously marred by commerce or industry.
The Torngats harbour breeding and nestling sites for such endangered species as the peregrine falcon and the eastern Harlequin duck. The mountains stand astride the migratory path of the George River caribou herd – the world’s largest, at half a million animals – and encompass the entire range of the Torngat Mountain caribou herd. Black bears, musk oxen, wolves, polar bears, and eagles also populate the range.
