Details / Niagara on the Lake
Here in this small town on the shores of Lake Ontario at the mouth of the Niagara River is a haven of charm and character, a perfect balance to Niagara Falls on its east.
Niagara on the Lake may seduce you, with its shady, tree-lined streets, its quaint nineteenth century homes, its parks, avenues and old-fashioned main street. The town is unique in Ontario, full of the flavour of a bygone era.
A major attraction here in the summer is the Shaw Festival which showcases the work of George Bernard Shaw and other playwrights and draws visitors from all over Canada, the US and even Europe. It is entertainment of world-class calibre.
The town was originally called Newark and was the first capital of the territory known as Upper Canada from 1791-1796, until the legislature was moved to what is now Toronto. The first settlement of Upper Canada began here, under the supervision of Colonel John Graves Simcoe and his wife.
