To start an exploration of the Tombstones, turn off just before kilometre 72 at the Dempster Interpretive Centre and campground for 535,000-acre Tombstone Territorial Park. Interpreters staff the modest visitor centre during the summer and conduct campground talks and guided hikes. The campground rests in a wooded area by the banks of the North Klondike and offers an easy, half-mile trail from the back of the campground near the river. Watch for moose, beavers, and bears.
The interpretive staff can recommend many longer outings that lead from the forested valley bottoms up to the open alpine tundra on the hills and mountains. Though these are cross-country routes, the openness of the terrain makes navigation relatively easy; visitors with a modicum of outdoor skills can manage the shorter hikes. Bear in mind that cross-country travel, even on the open slopes where most vegetation hugs the ground, generally is much slower than walking on a trail. In fact, it is frequently easier to hike when the ground is still partially frozen than during peak summer days.
