Details / Scatarie Island
Birds are the big attraction of tiny Scatarie Island, which hosts a rich and diverse population of pelagic species, including scads of Leach’s storm-petrels. Form July to September, whimbrels and buff-breasted sandpipers drop in by the thousands to feast on the island’s blueberries, cranberries, and bakeapples.
Scatarie may be visited by boat from Main-a-Dieu, the fishing village opposite the island; head for the town wharf and ask a lobsterman to ferry you across the short distance to the island.
