Details / Dewey Soper Migratory Bird Sanctuary
Established in 1957 and designated a Wetland of International Importance, this 2-million-acre bird sanctuary stretches 155 miles from Foxe Basin in the south-western part of Baffin Island to the vast tidal flats and coastal tundra of the Great Plain of the Koukdjuak.
Today, the wetland provides nesting grounds for almost one-third of Canada’s lesser snow goose population. An ideal habitat for water birds, the Great Plain consists mostly of marshy wet and dry tundra saturated with shallow ponds, lakes, and hundreds of slowly flowing streams. The beaches along Foxe Basin stretch nearly nine miles wide at low tide.
