Ontario took its name from the Iroquois word meaning shining waters and her you can enjoy the grandeur of lake and forest, as well as Canada’s greatest metropolis and a crown of smaller cities and towns.
Ontario cavers an area bigger than France and Spain combined. It stretches 1,000 miles from the barren coat of Hudson Bay in the north to the crowded cities of the south. Most of this vast province is part of the Canadian Shield, where two-billion-year-old rocks underlie a landscape of forest, muskeg, and countless lakes.
With more than 12 million inhabitants, Ontario is the most populous of Canada’s provinces. More than 80 per cent of Ontarians are town dwellers, nearly for million of them living in Toronto alone.
There is certain intimacy with the United States at Niagara Falls, where little Goat Island separates the Horseshoe Falls in Canada from the American Falls. The falls are a spectacular attraction, but if your stay in Ontario is limited to a day trip here from Toronto, you will miss out on most of what this province has to offer.
