Details / Halfway Lake Provincial Park
![]() |
Halfway Lake is in the forested, lake-speckled scenery adored by Ontarians, although the park’s immediate setting is more steep and hilly than much of north-eastern Ontario. Of the park’s 20 lakes, Halfway Lake is the largest, but smaller jewels await discovery by hikers and canoeists.
As with many northern parks, the forest grows more lushly in the valleys where soils from glacial deposits are more fertile than the barren rocks of higher elevations. The park has a few large, majestic white pines that survived the logger’s axe, though much of the park is covered in jack pine forest, an indicator that forest fire was present in earlier decades.
The campgrounds are spacious, private and well spread out. Wild Rose Campground has 85 hydro sites mainly for trailers; all have electricity. Campers in sites closest to Hwy 144 may find traffic noise a nuisance; a good plan is to reserve the sites farther from the highway, which are in general the higher-numbered sites.
