Details / Lake Superior Provincial Park
![]() |
The backcountry of Lake Superior Provincial Park is rugged, and many of its trails and canoe routes are demanding. The park staff maintains 11 hiking trails and 8 canoe routes. Some of the portages are long, but the effort is well worthwhile. The interior lakes are pristine, the water is generally clear, and the trout fishing is good. In some of the remote areas, the chances of seeing a moose or a bear are as good as seeing another human.
The best way to see Lake Superior is on foot. Approximately 75 miles of hiking trails are maintained, in varying lengths and degrees of difficulty. Eight maintained canoe routes cut through the park, some easy day trips, others longer affairs with frequent portaging; at least four may require shuttle services for boat pickup at the end.
Even though there are many fine beaches on the shores of Lake Superior, you’ll also encounter sheer cliffs and rock shorelines. In addition, the water is frigid, and the storms unpredictable and fast moving.
