Details / The Legislative Assembly of Ontario
![]() |
Rising majestically above the lush grounds of Queen’s Park, Ontario’s Legislative Building is situated in the heart of downtown Toronto. The seat of provincial parliament since 1893, this impressive building serves as a showcase for Ontario’s history and rich parliamentary heritage.
Designed by architect Richard Waite, the Legislative Building was built between 1886 and 1892. Waite’s design incorporated a Romanesque Revival style heavily influenced by northern Italian architecture, with its rounded archways and detailed sandstone exterior.
At the heart of the building is the Legislative Chamber, with its richly carved details set in mahogany and Canadian sycamore. There, Members of Provincial Parliament debate and pass laws for the Province of Ontario. During the spring and fall, the public may watch the debates from the Visitor’s galleries.
