The landscape of the Yukon Territory is dotted with numerous rivers and lakes. The Yukon is one of two territories in Canada’s North, and it is the country’s most western point. Those who make their home in the Yukon take advantage of what the area has of offer, spending much of their time in the spectacular outdoors.
Once referred to as the Gateway to the Gold Rush, the Yukon Territory takes its name from the Kutchin Indian name for the Yukon River. Called “Great River”, it drains over two-thirds of the Territory as well as part of British Columbia and much of Alberta. The hunting ancestors of today’s Yukon native people have been in the area since approximately 8,000 BC.
The Yukon acquired its colourful reputation from the Klondike Gold Rush. When the world discovered the Yukon it was through the exploits of its rough and tumble adventurers and its equally daring officers of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
