Details / Sheep Mountain
To see a different side of Kluane, drive 70 kilometres to Sheep Mountain. To Sheep Mountain, where a small visitor centre serves as a staging area for exploring this end of the park. This is a relatively dry region of Kluane in which the south facing slopes offer sport sage, winter fat, and other arid-land species. Dall’s sheep thrives on this forage in the winter; Sheep Mountain supports an exceptionally high density of 18 sheep per square mile.
Whether you can see sheep from the deck of visitor centre depends on what time of year you are looking. The sheep use the southeast slopes of the mountain as winter range, in part because strong winds keep the plants fairly clear of snow. As the weather warms and the snow melts, the sheep move up the mountain, following the line of greening plants.
A handful of trails and vaguely defined routes lead along the Slims River, just south of Sheep Mountain, or up into the high country behind Sheep Mountain. One of the most appealing, a long day hike, is the 12-kilometre, moderately difficult Bullion Plateau Trail.
