The nation’s most popular resort has been drawing visitors for two decades. Though its own appeal seems limited, its proximity so San Jose assures a regular local clientele. Jaco also remains steadfastly popular with Canadian charter tourists.
Jaco, 15 km south of Parque Nacional Carara, remains Costa Rica’s most developed retreat, and scores of hotels, international restaurants, surf shops, and travel services line the sole drag, which runs parallel to Hwy 34.
Flanked by headlands, the palm-fringed beach of gray sand extends for 3.2. Tidal pools beneath the headlands can be tempting, but beware of the strong riptides. Pura Vida Botanical Garden has manicured self-guided trails; its riotous colours and scents draw birds in profusion.
