Striking for its simple adobe architecture, this whitewashed provincial capital resounds to the clip-clop of hooves, providing an intriguing sun bleached way stop beneath the gaze of Rincon de la Vieja volcano and handily situated as a springboard for Parque Nacional Santa Rosa and the Peninsula de Nicaya.
Liberia is without a doubt the most colonial of Costa Rican cities, redolent with its own unique charm that owes much to its historic core of red-tile-roofed buildings made of ignimbrite, a diatomaceous rock as white as burning magnesium for which Liberia is known colloquially as the White City.
Situated at the heart of Guanacaste and cattle country, Liberia is wholeheartedly a cowboy town and plays host to several lively fiestas, when townsfolk dress up in traditional garb for the parades, mariachis serenade, and rodeos provide entertainment.
