Details / Reserva Natural Absoluta Cabo Blanco
Dangling off the tip on Nicoya, this 1,172-hectare reserve lies at the boundary between tropical dry and tropical wet ecosystems and is known for its rich biodiversity, including Pacific tropical lowland forest unique to southwest Nicoya. For hardy hikers the rewards are enriching.
The reserve wraps around the south-western shores of Nicoya, protecting precious forest that drape mountainous shoulders. Sendero Sueco is a stiff climb over steep ridges before dropping down to lonesome Playa Cabo Blanco and Playa Balsita, separated by a great headland. The crushed-diamond beaches have tidal pools good for spotting sea urchins and sea stars.
The park is under threat, from too much visitation, and wildlife species have increasingly retreated to the park interior, bringing demands for further restrictions.
