A billiard table on a grand scale, the Northern Lowlands comprise a watery world of lagoons, rivers, and rain forest – all of it superb for birding, fishing, and other adventures.
Green and undulating like a vast swelling sea, the flatlands span northern Costa Rica, sweeping across the nation from east to west. The sparkling streams and rives that rush down from the vaulting mountains leave indelible impressions on those who venture into the Northern Lowlands.
Despite its east-west expanse, climactically the Northern Lowlands lie fully within the aegis of the Caribbean. Visitors should be prepared for hot and humid weather and the relatively ill-defined seasonal differences. Nature lovers can find their nirvanas. Cano Negro is a vast wetland ecosystem and a prime choice for birding, for viewing crocodiles, and also for tackling feisty tarpon and other game fish.
