Details / Plaza de la Cultura
The nondescript Plaza de la Cultura is the centre around which life in San Jose whirls. It lies at the heart of a pedestrian-only shopping zone extending seven blocks along Avenida Central. The plaza is a gathering spot for youth, and jugglers and musicians entertain the crowds on weekends. A clock tower and fountain stand at the junction of Avenida Central and Calle 3.
On the east of the plaza, steps lead to the subterranean Museo de Oro Pre-Columbiano, the gold museum, best explored using the audio-taped self-guided tours. 2000 pieces of pre-Columbian gold jewellery and life-size figures adorned in gold glitter under spotlights.
