Mexico’s distinct geographic curvature makes for a unique topography. Thee 2 million square km. of land are home to sun-beaten deserts, jungles rainforests, soaring volcanoes, low coastal lagoons, gorgeous beaches, and red canyons, making Mexico one of the most ecologically striking countries in the world.
Because of its varied climate, Mexico is one of the most biologically diverse countries in the world, hosting estimated 10 per cent of the world’s plant and animal species. Mexico’s climate ranges from arid areas in the north to subtropical conditions in the south.
Mexico’s heterogeneity finds its roots in history. The Spanish conquest gave rise to the nation’s largest ethnic group, mestizos – persons of mixed indigenous and European blood – who now comprise 60 per cent of the population. Mexicans of pure European descent make up around 9 per cent of the population. Indigenas account for 30 per cent of the population and make up the majority in rural areas.
Mexico loves to celebrate its rich history, and nearly every month boasts a national holiday. In addition to these official fiestas, cities and towns across the country host smaller-scale but lively events to honour patron saints or local traditions.
