Details / La Bufadora

La Bufadora is a spectacular blowhole located in the coastal cliffs on the Punta Banda peninsula in Baja California. The right combination of swells and tides produces an enormous spray, but even the smaller waves are impressive. The geyser is accompanied by the tremendous roar that gives La Bufadora – buffalo snort – its name.
The spectacular spray is caused when the surge from heavy ocean swells is channelled through a deep underwater canyon into a narrow cave in the cliff. Incoming ocean waves collide with air pumped down by the force of receding waters after the previous waterspout. Compressed air and water then explode upward through the only exit, forcing water to spray high into the sky.
La Bufadora is located 27 kilometres south of Ensenada at the tip of the Punta Banda peninsula, and is certainly worth a visit.
