Details / Parque Nacional Lagunas de Montebello
![]() |
Lakes of different hues are sprinkled throughout this national park like a handful of translucent marbles flung down by a tempestuous giant. The presence of different kinds and levels of oxides causes the lakes to take on different shades, especially noticeable when the sun is shining brightly. Some glow a deep green, others are emerald, steel gray, greenish-blue, violet, or pale blue.
Because of weeds growing on the lake bottom and occasional drownings over a period of many years, locals do not recommend swimming in the majority of these lovely lakes. However, even they deem a few lakes safe, and others can be toured on log rafts, row-boats, and pedal-boats. The lake district is about 48 kilometres southeast of Comitan, where you can pick up a map at the tourist office.
