Details / Cathedral Metropolitana
The third cathedral built in New Spain was the Metropolitan Cathedral, a mish-mash of architectural styles from three different centuries that somehow turned out beautifully. Originally constructed by Cortez in 1524 over the main Aztec temple, the small church was replaced by a larger cathedral, begun in 1571. the interior was completed in 1667 and famous architect and sculptor Monuel Tolsa finished the impressive exterior in 1813, adding Neoclassical elements to the façade.
The cathedral contains a series of altars and chapels. Highlights include the decadent Altar of Forgiveness at the entrance, and the Altar of Kings at the far end, and the beautiful murals of dragon slaying and the Virgin’s ascension by Juan Correo that adorn the sacristy of walls.
