Mexico’s capital is one of the world’s largest and most exciting cities in the world. Estimates of the city’s population vary depending on who is counting and how one determines the urban limits, but most agree that it reaches almost nine million in the city proper and between 17 and 25 million in the greater Federal District. A contender for the title of most museums and theatres in the world, the city takes in more than 2 million tourists per year.

Most tourist areas lie within easy reach of the city centre. Many attractions are on just Paseo de la Reforma, the broad concourse that runs southwest-northeast, or Insurgentes, which cuts north-south through the city.
