Details / Church of Santa Prisca
In 1750, members of the Catholic bourgeoisie sought social prestige through pious works that enabled them to enter the Establishment.
The highly elaborate façade of pink limestone is marked by its sophistication and exuberance, although the stark lower sections of the two side towers provide visual relief and balance. Above the portal, a bas –relief crowning the papal tiara depicts the baptism of Christ. Every single niche and space between the pillars seems o be filled with cherubs, plant motifs, shells and escutcheons. This lavish décor is echoed by the upper bodies of he towers, replete with carvings.
Inside, the walls are adorned with nine gigantic Churrigueresque altarpieces, made by Vicente Balbas with gold-leaf wood alternating with pink stone pilasters. There are also fine paintings.
