A magnificent road crosses the woody countryside before reaching this unusual ceremonial centre. The Hill of Idols is a monolithic structure built by the Matlazincas. The construction work began in 1501, in the reign of Ahuitzotl.
At the top of the broad staircase leading to the entrance to the temple, visitors are confronted by an enormous forked tongue, protruding form a serpent’s mouth that serves as the entrance to the circular pyramid. Inside, a half moon cavity has been carved into the rock, encircled by a bench and embellished with sculptures of jaguar and two eagles.
On solstice days, the sun enters through the serpent’s mouth and lights up the entire space within. This temple was used for the initiation of the eagle and jaguar warriors who belonged to the nobility.
