This provides the best vantage point for admiring the Pyramid of the Sun. Although the latter is higher, the two peaks are at the same altitude due to a slight slope.

Major excavations are currently in progress and, contrary to received wisdom, they have revealed a necropolis. The digs undertaken by the archaeologist Ruben Cabrera since 1998 have brought to light several funeral chambers with sumptuous offering, such as obsidian knives and a jade masque of Mayan origin. In 2004, the discovery of an offering consisting of sacrificed children, puma bones and various obsidian objects suggests that the tomb of a senior dignitary is hidden somewhere under the Pyramid of the Moon
