With an estimated population of 1.1 million people, Managua is the largest city in Nicaragua. Nearly one-forth of the population lives here. From the top of Loma de Tiscapa, the whole city is visible. The most beautiful part of this view is the Tiscapa Lagoon, a shallow pond that shimmers in the sun. The lagoon, which formed after rainwater filled a crater made by a volcanic eruption, is surrounded by lush green trees.
Managua became an important city in 1852 when two rival political factions, the Liberals and the Conservatives, settled their differences by choosing the sleepy town as the nation’s capital. Before this decision, Leon and Granada were the two most important cities in Nicaragua. The Liberals dominated Leon and the Conservatives controlled Granada.
Because the city is situated on a major fault line, new development in Managua has been outside the city where new neighbourhoods, shops, and restaurants are being built.
