The town of Volcan enjoys a gloriously scenic setting on the western flank of Volcan Baru. Though its own appeal is limited, it draws adventure-minded visitors keen on kayaking, hiking, or birding, while coffee estates line a spectacular ridge-top drive that extends west to the Costa Rica border.

All services locally are centred on the town of Hato de Volcan, on a bare, high plateau on the south-western slopes of Volcan Baru. The area was first settled by Swiss immigrants a century ago, and their architectural legacy is evident. The nondescript town serves as a gateway to sites farther afield.

Janson’s Coffee House is hilltop coffee roaster and cafe above the company beneficio on the south side of town. Free torus of the company’s La Torcaza Estate coffee farm and beneficio are given by request. Birders should head to nearby Lagunas de Volcan. These three small lagoons enveloped by wetlands covering 143 hectares are an important stop for purple gallinules, masked ducks, and other migratory waterfowl. The muddy access road begins on the north side of the airstrip and is suitable or four wheel drive vehicles only.
