Details / Alaska Native Heritage Centre
Situated on the city outskirts, this is an excellent place to learn about Alaska Native culture and history. Although it displays wonderful artwork and historical artefacts, the centre is emphatically not a museum.
Staff greets visitors at the Welcome House. From there a half-mile trail leads around a small lake to several village sites, each depicting a particular culture or a group of similar cultures. Villages include an underground community house built in Inupiaq and St. Lawrence Yupik styles, as well as a large clan house that reflects Southeast Native traditions.
The Hall of Cultures brims with art and crafts, both historic and contemporary. Many of the works are for sale. The Gathering Place hosts Native storytellers, dancers, athletes, and other performers.
