Details / Mitchell Bay
Many canoers and kayakers head for Mitchell Bay on the dry site of the Admiralty Island. The Tlingit community of Angoon is the main access point here. Located at the mouth of Kootznahoo Inlet, the bay offers a network of shoals, channels and small wooded islands for you to explore.
Deer and bears wander the beaches and forests. Harbour seals periscope up above the waves to check out paddlers. Sometimes black-and-white waterbirds flee at the fist sign of an approaching boat; at other times they wait until the last second before diving to safety.
There are no developed hiking trails in Mitchell Bay, but its beaches are great for open-ended rambles. You will find abundant secluded camping spots along the way. Beachcombing at low tide reveals barnacles, limpets, mussels, chitons, anemones, sea stars, sea slugs. Expect to meet local people engaged in fishing and hunting.
