Details / Prince William Sound Region
![]() |
Renowned for two of Alaska’s premier wild places – Prince William Sound and Wrangell–St. Elias National Park and Preserve – this region has few settlements. Of them, one was built on copper, one on fishing, and one on oil.
This swath of south central Alaska encompasses a striking blend of land and sea. The land is a vast and diverse expanse of spruce lowlands, rain forest, majestic rivers, and high county fife with towering peaks and massive glaciers; it supports plentiful wildlife.
The sound is a wonderfully irregular world of lushly forested islands, fjords that slash deep into the mainland, jagged peninsulas, and deep waters teeming with life.
Prince William Sound has also gained a place in history. The 1964 Good Friday earthquake, the most violent quake ever recorded in North America, had its epicentre here. The shock waves and the tsunamis that followed pounded the area, levelling villages and the city of Valdez.
