Details / Russell Fiord Wilderness
The Russell Fiord Wilderness encompasses the Russell and Nunatak Fiords, as well as portions of the majestic stewards that surround them. Showing no regards whatsoever for international boundaries; these range criss-crosses from coastal Alaska to interior Canada and back again.
In summer, cruise ships sailing north through the Gulf of Alaska toward the ports of Seward and Anchorage sometimes visit active Hubbard Glacier. But not always. All that activity kicks out lots of ice, which can make navigation treacherous.
By kayaking and camping in Russell Fiord, you can treat yourself to great views of the icebergs flowing in and out with the tidal currents like elephants on parade, as photographer Michael Melford once described them. You can fly in on a chartered floatplane from Yakutat, but once it departs, you and those parading elephants are on your own.
